Gentleman Don't Sail To Weather - Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 188

Sailing SV Delos 150 913 subscribers

We try not to sail to weather... Ever! It's sort of like a big night of drinking, you promise you'll never do it again. But.... We have a date with the airport in Recife and decide to make tracks north. We have 5 days of headwinds and current against us, but we make it to Recife. The only casualty- Mr. Brady's laptop battles a wave and loses :( We arrive just in time to greet Karin's brother Ragnar, and say goodbye to our beloved Leesir Ninja Beast as she heads back home to friends and family in Austria. • just had an epiphany watching this episode; to wit, what is the feasability of suspending hammock-type sleeping apparatus on shock-cord/bungee cords in the forward cabin (and/or all over the ship) to mitigate the pounding when sailing into the wind...I know many things are mounted on gimbals but I was wondering if there are attachment points sturdy enough to install eye hooks from which to suspend hammocks without compromising the structural integrity of Delos...I know Brian is pretty handy with repairing things out in the middle of nowhere but would not want to see half-assed jury rigging on your Home. perhaps you can e-mail Amel and propose this idea in future ships or at least they can try to engineer some similar solution to the aforementioned problem. Love you all, love sailing vicariously with you, Safe sailing and may the Lord be with you Always

  • If Brian wasn't such an asshole they'd be sailing in a brand new Catamaran built by the same company that made Delos. He went to a meeting with the company's brass without even bothering to get the pronunciation of their names correctly. He then magnified his stupidity by announcing to them that he 'was going to butcher their names.' He's an idiot. It's all about him.

  • Watching people come to Delos is very cool. They arrive and are accepted into the family. Some are here and gone and some stay on and we get to watch them grow within the family. When they leave is becomes emotional, you watch for a few years and they become a part of your weekly trip to other parts of the world through Delos. Stay safe Lisa, be well.

I just have to say that Lisa’s quiet moments where she poured her heart out have been some of my favorite to watch and she did such a wonderful job at reminding us just how magnificent this world is. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us Lisa, I will miss you.

  • Lisa, I can't imagine how spending 9 months on Delos would not be a life altering experience. Having a camera on you and your life shown to the world takes a courage I know I do not possess. Your introspective commentaries during the nights on passage have been a very high point for me. You've always expressed yourself and described situations beautifully. Best Delos crew ever, I'm going to miss you a lot.

  • Well I hate that Lisa had to leave Delos and the crew to go back to Austria , but hopefully she will return someday soon. She always had something cool to talk about especially on watch , I loved seeing the sunsets and sunrises she filmed and her cooking things from her home country for the crew. It’s hard to believe nine months has gone by and I hope Lisa made it home safety and she’s keeps in touch with the crew. I wish her the best in her new adventure in Austria. Also I’m happy Karen’s brother came back for another cruise. I know Karen is happy to see her brother.

  • Starting a siphon Do not fill one tank all the way. Put a hose in first tank. Using a funnel pour fuel from 2nd tank, through the hose, and into the first tank. Remove the funnel, cap the hose with your thumb or a cork.

  • What a hard goodbye! It made me cry like never before. Really hard to see Leesir leave the crew for now. She was the one who made me also cry at the last days of the passage from Africa to Brasil. This time, I felt so sad. Wish you all the best, Lisa. Good winds for the remaining crew. I really love you guys.

  • Every time a woman leaves the crew Kazaa takes the hardest hit. That natural longing for stable, longterm female sisterhood backstabs in the end. How many times can one hurt the same wound. Sad to see you go, Lisa. Time for your own family, Kazaa.

  • Lessir is the first crew member that I had a hard time watching leave and will miss incredibly since Joyse and Babs. BTW, loved the super-slo mo shots in this episode. One last item, the preview of the running aground took me back to when I ran my Dad's 34' cruiser into a sand bar. We were stuck something awful. I was carefully watch the depth gauge and all of a sudden the depth went 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1beeeeeeeeeeeeeep...damn it!!!! The funny part was at the end of the season when the boat was pulled out for storage and my Dad says to me "that is the weirdest thing???" "the paint is completely missing from bow to stern about 2' wide, like it was stripped off"...lolololol

  • OMG we had to sail into the weather.......THE HORROR!!!!BOOOOOOORING!!!! Just a bunch of bums that don't wash and shave bumming around in the nautical equivalent of a Kombi. No make that a Winnebago. Truly inspirational. Plenty of sailors have done the exact same with FAR less aids and don't feel the need to make boring videos about it. Your egos must be on fire!

  • Dear Leesir, I know you are bound to be settled into home and friends though your heart surely must feel as if a part is missing...I hope that all your many adventures, accomplishments and lessons in life, about what is important here!, on the planet, how real friendships and relationships are treasure are all- as such strong take-aways- from the Delos and your dear pepes will serve to best-help your heart remain always full of that love. Being a yogi, your "boat yoga" even the snipets of balancing, meditating and practice was all impressive to me as was and is your eternally young-take on life. Many here seem to be equally impressed by all things that are part of you, so that is fantastic as well. Perhaps you will let us all know how you are doing? I believe that you do music, video and art related activities/work? Best of everything to you! With blessings I send of peace and love to you! p. s. after once when Jim and I were traveling for his business and work, I dreamed a bit of possibly being alble to spend some time living in Austria. It truly was an amazing experience staying in Salzburg for one week though short it was sweet. I hope you will enjoy your time now throughout your beautiful home and Europe. dss

  • 16:35 Oh, those drunken marina shenanigans. Have you ever played the game where you take a drink and then try to run from one end of the dock to the other while only stepping on your dock-mates tethered boats (with their permission o' course!) while not falling into the water? Turns out, it can't be done. But it sure is fun trying.
