  • I subbed after 3 videos. This must be some kind of a record. You do realise that if someone doesn’t use the #GamerGate hashtag then they can’t claim to be in #GamerGate and you can’t categorise those not identifying as such as being members of this discredit movement which was associated with toxic misogyny from its outset.

  • These people will never be happy, constantly telling lies and crying over their own view of it. Also they seem to think gamers are a unified group that they are opposed to on some sort of level. Even though those who like video games only participate in talking about why they liked the very thing they played. For some reason they treat it as if it was a platform for advertising their political agenda and honestly they seem like a cult.

  • Pay to play, games you pay for, as in not free to play. So, most but not all games, simple really.

  • Honestly pay to play is something I'd defend, it is subscription games like World of Warcraft and is totally different to pay to win, at least when it is done honestly. You pay for the use of the game, a regular amount that doesn't continue to dick your wallet for in game advantage (though WoW has some of that too).

  • I want to ask a very cynical question. The plagiarist was a male. He got fired practically instantly and everyone disassociated themselves from him as they should have and he was pretty much publicly shamed and got his reputation tarnished. Justice in the eyes of everyone, gamers and journalists alike. My question is; if the plagiarist was a female, do you think journalist would have jumped to defend her while gamers demanded justice and then it would have been GamerGate harassment again in the eyes of the journalists?

  • "pay to play" refers to pretty much any MMO with a subscription model (eg. EVE online) Personally, I've grown fairly fond of this payment model for such games, as it makes sure that the only people who play the game are those who are serious about the game (fewer SJW casuals) and $15 a month is pretty much the cost of a movie ticket, for which instead you get hours and possibly days of enjoyment. And you know the developers can guarantee the continuation of servers without needing to put in pay to win mechanics or RM stores. But hey, there's a whole lot of cons - just like there are for any payment system, so meh. And obviously nobody in their right mind would use this model for single player games or fast paced pvp shooters etc.

  • "Pay to Play" refers to games that offer unfair (often times game breaking) bonuses to players who buy in-game currencies or upgrades for real-world cash. Typically, these types of games are found on smart phones.

All the major game journalism outlets didn't defend a blatant review thief by calling their entire demographic dead, and the fans in return didn't have to fight all the literally fake news articles for months after that? *You. Don't. Fucking. Say. I'm so surprised at this completely unlikely turn of events, journofag.*

  • Buy to play is a PC gamer term for buying the game once and being able to play online for free without a sub. This is generally referred to MMOs, Buy to Play (one time purchase free online) Pay to Play (subscription). and the obvious Free to Play. The idiot just isn't using the terms correctly.

    Reply
  • Pay to play is basically pay to win because it isn’t worth playing the game unless it has an additional price tag to it or the game could be free but has micro transactions that are pricey and involve gambling tings. Like SAO IF.

The guy got caught doing something unethical and instead of having it swept under the rug IGN fired his ass. Why would I get all fired up and angry about that? Maybe just maybe the reason it's not a big deal is because its the kind of bare minimum response to an ethics violation that we should expect(an actual firing.) instead of a complete industry wide witch hunt of their own consumers meant to deflect attention.

Ign saw accusations of plagarism, ign investigated and found plagarism, ign took down the article and fired the plagarist and appologized to the independent youtuber that was plagarized and motion twin for having their name on the article and went about their buisness. There is nothing else for gg (which appa again points out, is dead now) to mob on. We won. A piece of shit non gamer who thought he could get away with PLAGARISM didnt. Mission Accomplished. • Why would the consumers of gaming products be interested in the people who write about how horrible the consumer is? If they think gaming is not inclusive they should look at the sales and who is buying all the copies of FIFA, but that is not an inclusive enough game for it doesn't have any of the women's teams. When you look at the only reasons consumers look at these articles it is for one thing only, "are they offering any exclusive DLC", no one cares unless they are getting exclusive content like "DICE Camo" and the promotion they had with Slim Jims. I'm laughing at the concept of pay 2 play, people who play mobile games exclusively complain about this feature. Very few games can afford to go free to play and heavily rely on DLC content purchases.

  • Super late to answer the question, but if i remember right. There a few possibilities to the pay to play, firstly is subscription models instead of upfront payment, second is locking core gameplay, story, etc behind extra money just to scam players and thirdly paying to get a massive jump past others who may be grinding to get to certain points of the game, in a sense, paying to play later stages/with later items/etc.

  • My memory of the beginning of GG is hazy, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but here's my explanation for this: This guy got caught plagiarising and was immediately fired. Done, justice served. With Zoe Quinn (again, as far as I remember) no official action was taken against her after she was suspected of providing sexual favors in exchange for positive reviews. That perceived injustice was what sparked outside outrage.

  • I don't see how GamerGaters have to fix this when IGN already did its job and fixed this. Generally grass-roots movements only act when higher authorities purposefully try to bury the problem because they don't want to have to fire their cronies. Pay to play is where you have to pay to access particular areas in an otherwise free game, sometimes this takes the form of the base game being free but all the areas with the stuff worth having need to be paid for. Anyway it's not necessarily a bad model since it gives players the opportunity to play in the game and figure out if they like it but it also forces them to pay money for the game (an odd concept, I know). Or you might have the first areas of the game available for free but you have to pay to access areas beyond that. Or you might have to pay to unlock characters. Basically it's a way of trying to create a game that you have to pay for like say most console games but packaged in such a way that it's palatable to the mobile gaming crowd who are absolutely never going to buy something that requires them to pay for it up front. Of course the downside is since there is no cost upfront a number of companies have been, shall we say, somewhat over-ambitious with what they charge for the add-ons and some of these games end up costing hundreds of dollars if you want to unlock everything immediately. There are a couple reasons GamerGaters might be quieter about it. The first is that this isn't an ethics in games journalism problem, it's a ethics in game monetization problem. The second is that with a few exceptions this is mainly a mobile platform problem and I'm fairly sure most gamergaters are console/PC gamers, this sort of predatory practice isn't a problem for them because they rarely encounter it. And when they do they bitch to high heaven. And of course GamerGate mostly diffused back into the normal gamer population.

  • Okay, so here's the thing: I disagree with the article because it IS full of shit and obviously biased towards reaching a predetermined conclusion. However, i dislike KiA precisely because of what was shown in the article. The whole thing about complaining about feminism and other shit like that that is not relevant at all to video game journalism. Keep in mind I'm making no judgement on the validity of the complaints. I just don't think KiA should have been the place to discuss them. Essentially it took the opposite direction to what I wanted it to take. Let me exemplify: - The direction it took: Unethical video game journalism -> SJW biased unethical video game journalism -> SJW biased unethical journalism -> SJW bias in general life - The direction I wanted it to take: Unethical video game journalism -> Unethical practices in the video game industry In short, I was a lot more invested in the "gaming" side of the issue, while it seems the majority were more invested in the "journalism" part of the issue, and it spiraled into a tangent from there. Not only was it something I did not care about, it also gave ammunition to shitty articles such as this, with their whole "LOOK LOOK ITS NOT ABOUT ETHICS IN GAMING JOURNALISM REEEEEEEE"

Only ones that really come into mind are World of Warcraft and Final Fantasies 14... And I guess Final Fantasy 11, but I don't know how long it's gonna hang along... Second would be the subscription services of the PS and Xbox, where you need to pay to play games online... Which I really doubt you'll find anyone defending... I mean, ask any PS4 or Xbox 1 owner would they rather pay monthly to play games online or have it be free...

You can only lie so damn much everyone else before eventually you start believing your own damn lies that is the first dangerous mistake to make on your path to downfall. But as stated I'm tired I'm no longer than even yell let it go you lost I've already yelled enough about the Russian conspiracy not existing. But I think that's kind of the point they keep doing it until eventually. Opposition grows tired of constantly telling them to let that s*** go they have no proof whatsoever

  • Pay to play is an old practice, used commonly by muds and early MMOs. You didn't have to buy the game, but you needed to pay a monthly fee to be able to play. (Examples: Meridian 59, early Everquest). In particulat Meridian 59 came bundled with the physical copy of Heroes of Might and Magic 2, and you could install it easilly. Hell, the game itself was free distribution, but , in order to play it, you had to pay a monthly fee of... 5 $ was it? I think it was 5 $. Before those games, even, old MUDs had this system in the early 90s. All you had to do to connect to the mud was use a telnet connection.... AND pay a monthly fee. So, it wasgames without a price tag, but still monthly costs. Those games wer highly addictive, which resulted in people paying more in fees than what they'd pay for a full game. Nowaday, a couple MMOs still use that system.
